It is a common business axiom - change or die. As a small or

yourself is hard, how can you change an entire business,
organization, process or department?
As a Certified Business Coach, one of the biggest challenges my
clients face is this issue of change. Did you know there are
eight reasons why organizations fail to change from a lack of
urgency to underestimating the power of vision to failing to
create short-term wins? The eight reasons are:
1.Lack of a sense of urgency 2.Failing to create a sufficiently
powerful guiding coalition 3.Underestimating the power of vision
4.Not communicating the vision 5.Allowing obstacles to block the

Take the third reason, for example, underestimating the power of

understands the vision, work gets done, employees are energized,
and processes get put into place. Without a guiding vision,

Last month we discussed building credibility and trust at your
website, so that visitors feel comfortable buying from you. That

lifetime value of each customer, that is, getting your one-time

It is a common business axiom - change or die. As a small or
mid-sized business owner or a manager, there will be times you
will need to make changes in your organization but may not be
sure how to go about it. Change is hard to implement and even
harder to sustain. Think about all of the people who have
trouble sticking to a diet or quitting smoking or keeping up
with an exercise program, let alone just starting. If changing
yourself is hard, how can you change an entire business,
organization, process or department?
As a Certified Business Coach, one of the biggest challenges my
clients face is this issue of change. Did you know there are
eight reasons why organizations fail to change from a lack of
urgency to underestimating the power of vision to failing to
create short-term wins? The eight reasons are:
1.Lack of a sense of urgency 2.Failing to create a sufficiently
powerful guiding coalition 3.Underestimating the power of vision
4.Not communicating the vision 5.Allowing obstacles to block the
new vision 6.Failing to create short-term wins 7.Declaring
victory too soon 8.Neglecting to anchor changes firmly into the
corporate culture
Take the third reason, for example, underestimating the power of
vision. A clear vision helps direct, align and inspire actions
on the part of large numbers of people. Lack of vision, on the
other hand, leads to lots of debate and confusion. Think about
the organizations you have worked for or know. When everyone
understands the vision, work gets done, employees are energized,
and processes get put into place. Without a guiding vision,
employees lose passion, urgency and focus. And, it is just as
critical to communicate your vision " reason number four "
instead of keeping it in your head. Communicate your vision to
your employees, vendors and clients - often.

Last month we discussed building credibility and trust at your
website, so that visitors feel comfortable buying from you. That
is half of the battle. The more important part is increasing the
lifetime value of each customer, that is, getting your one-time
buyers to be repeat customers. There are many factors that go
into this: marketing; product quality; and the consumable nature
of the product or service you sell. However, if you have poor

Since none of us is running a large company (I assume) and don't

Have you made a start? Or are you still thinking about it or
caught the very popular "I'm too busy" epidemic?
Mary's Story Mary runs her own publishing company employing 5
people. She is married with two teenagers.
When I first met Mary she told me how stressed out she was
trying to juggle work and home effectively.
Her business although surviving (just) could have achieved major
growth except for one major factor - Mary. She was very
disorganised and ran her business that way.
Mary was always complaining about the pressures of running her
business and having a life. I suggested to her that by having
personal coaching she would dramatically improve her
situation-guaranteed, providing she actioned the ideas, insights
and solutions she would gain through the process.
She's A 'Gunna' Mary was a 'gunna'. She was 'gunna' do this and
'gunna' do that. Unfortunately all she can and still does do is
talk about it. She won't make a decision. Money wasn't the
issue, after all she had invested thousands of dollars attending
an American guru's week long "life changing" bootcamp. She
thought that would be her "magic lifechanging pill".
Unfortunately Mary did not action what she had learned. She got
caught up in her chaotic life immediately on her return.
It's interesting to note that many people believe that the more
they spend on some of these seminars, the better the results
will be.
What they forget to factor into the equation is themselves.
The Latest Crisis I have spoken with her a few times and
suggested the best course of action to take and she always
responds with "not right now, I have this to do and that to do

If you are just starting a company and looking for funding, or
looking for additional funding for growth, you will need to
develop a traditional business plan. Creating a business plan is
a business hurdle that entrepreneurs seem to dread. Do you do it
yourself? Do you hire someone to do it? How do you get it done
quickly, but without spending too much money on it? Will what
you do yourself be adequate to get funding?
In this article I will discuss the pros and cons of
do-it-yourself business planning versus having a business
planning consultant do it for you or with you.
The Do It Yourself Business Plan
Particularly if you are seeking capital of less than $200,000,
consider creating the plan yourself after taking a class or
reading some books or getting some coaching for someone who has
written successful business plans.
Consider taking a three-hour business planning class through
SCORE or the local Small Business Development Center. Even if
you decide afterwards not to write your own plan, you will have
a much better idea of what you want out of the process and what
to expect.
There are some good reasons for an entrepreneur to do the
business plan:
-First of all, because you can. If you've read sample business
plans and find their accounting jargon intimidating, you are not
alone. But as long as you can clearly get your message across
and have other people such as you accountant look at the plan
before it goes to lenders or others, you can do this work

Upon beginning executive coaching, the executive is placing significant trust in the coach and the organization. She is allowing herself to be vulnerable and open. To ensure that she remains receptive to feedback, new ideas, and learning, the organization, coach, and other stakeholders must establish and maintain a psychologically safe and respectful environment.
The relationship between the executive and his coach is sensitive and often private. To maintain this relationship, all stakeholders must be clear in their presentation of issues, organizational information, coaching goals, coaching activities, and ground rules for confidentiality. All partners must adhere to clearly articulated guidelines and rules of engagement. Breaches of trust or actions that run counter to agreements and guidelines are extremely serious, especially if the executive suffers negative consequences such as a loss of reputation, income, or relationships. All parties must therefore function at the highest levels of integrity and candor when involved in executive coaching activities.
There is no recipe for the perfect coaching experience. Along the way, unpredictable challenges, conflicts, and opportunities arise. Whether these situations help or hinder the executive's development depends upon the judgment the stakeholders exercise in an ever-changing work environment.
