Risks and uncertainties involved in starting a new business coupled with stagnant economy discourage people to step up the plate and take a swing.

Global Entrepreneurship Monitor on its January issue supported this fact and said that entrepreneurial activity in the U.S. declined slightly (on the order of 5%) over a year to 11.3% in 2004. Americans used to be at 16.6% level in 2000.

Surprisingly, teenagers who would be the next-generation entrepreneurs in the U.S. are in favor of running their own businesses. In a survey conducted by Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, it was found that 67% of the youths (aged 14-19) were interested in giving a shot to entrepreneurship. Numbers would be likely to improve in the U.S. over time.

Although, new generation is ready to drive the numbers up, there are two basic problems to address before encouraging them to lean forward.

First is the saturation of U.S. and West European markets where both give innovations less chance to survive. David E. Gumpert, in his article, ëFor Entrepreneurs, a Harder Worldí talks about this issue. China factor and large organizations inclination to enter even into very small, immature markets kill the chance for entrepreneurs to find niche plays. He concludes by saying questioning about saturated markets are no longer unreasonable to ask and there are obvious disquieting signs on the horizon. His points need to be taken seriously.

Flushed with success, he began to experiment with new storytelling techniques, his costs went up and then the distributor went bankrupt. He was forced to dissolve his company and at one point could not pay his rent and was surviving by eating dog food.

2) Walt created a mildly successful cartoon character in 1926 called Oswald the Rabbit. When he tried to negotiate with his distributor, Universal Studios, for better rates for each cartoon, he was informed that Universal had obtained ownership of the Oswald character and they had hired Disney's artists out from under him.

3) When Walt tried to get MGM studios to distribute Mickey Mouse in 1927 he was told that the idea would never work-- a giant mouse on the screen would terrify women.

4) The Three Little Pigs was rejected by distributors in 1933 because it only had four characters, it was felt at that time that cartoons should have as many figures on the screen as possible. It later became very successful and played at one theater so long that the poster outside featured the pigs with long white beards.

What is the difference between a company that provides good service and one that provides great service? If you had to narrow it down to one characteristic, it would be communication.

Companies that provide great service clearly communicate what a customer or potential customer should expect when they do business with that company. They leave no doubt in the customer's mind.

Their customers are in the loop all the way. They know if an item is in stock. If it is not in stock when it is expected in. When their order will be shipped. And how.

If there is a problem they are informed. The company takes a proactive role in communicating with the customer. They don't wait for the customer to call them asking where their order is.

It is a common business axiom - change or die. As a small or

mid-sized business owner or a manager, there will be times you

will need to make changes in your organization but may not be

sure how to go about it. Change is hard to implement and even

harder to sustain. Think about all of the people who have

trouble sticking to a diet or quitting smoking or keeping up

with an exercise program, let alone just starting. If changing

yourself is hard, how can you change an entire business,

organization, process or department?

As a Certified Business Coach, one of the biggest challenges my

clients face is this issue of change. Did you know there are

eight reasons why organizations fail to change from a lack of

urgency to underestimating the power of vision to failing to

create short-term wins? The eight reasons are:

1.Lack of a sense of urgency 2.Failing to create a sufficiently

powerful guiding coalition 3.Underestimating the power of vision

Internet marketing, a lot of the time really is hit and miss. Always keep in mind that when you promote your site you are, in effect trying to get the word out to the whole world. Not an easy task! First and foremost, it is SO important to have effective ad copy. Without it, you truly are wasting your time and money. Along with effective ads, it's imperative that you have variety! Don't advertise all over the place with the same ad. The surfer of today seems to get bored very quickly, so it's important to pique their curiosity as often as possible.

Rotate your ads - this means, that if you post to ffa.net with Ad A on Monday, you will post to that site with Ad B on Tuesday. And track your ads so you know which ones are getting the most clicks. Once you know this, you can scratch the less-effective ads off your list, and write new and improved versions.
